Keeping up with new gay slang can be tricky to keep up with, but The Wrong Sauce podcast hosts are here to untangle the definition of a new queer term on the block: "soft masc."
A clip from a recent episode of the podcast where hosts Tip and Lou and guest Anna Clabaugh talk about the characteristics of a "soft masc" lesbian is currently making the rounds on TikTok.
"What is a soft masc?" Tip asks.
"They tend to have some emotional responsibility in some way for being with a femme person, but they tend to overcompensate sometimes withc certain elements of their presentation," Anna explains to the confused hosts. "So they're a little more masc, but maybe in the bedroom you don't feel that same energy."
Tip chimes in, asking the important question, "So they could be like a bottom?"

"They could be," Anna answers, before Lou chimes in with her guess of what a soft masc lesbian would be like in the bedroom. She jokes, "They front as top, but they are bottom, is that it? They front as bottom, but they are top?"
"They could be," Anna answers.
"It's a crap shoot. It's like Las Vegas, you never know," Tip decides.
"It's a gamble," Lou agrees.
Okay, so that might not have answered all of your questions about what a "soft masc" is and how it's different from a "soft butch," but people in the comments of the TikTok video seemed to agree with their assessment.
"I always thought I was a soft masc bc I have a girly pop personality. I'm dominant tho through and through," one person commented.
"I'm a soft masc but not a bottom. I'm versatile who likes dominant femmes," another person wrote, while someone else succinctly described what "soft masc" means: "I love the Jessica + Roger rabbit vibe."
Other viewers watched the video and realized the new term may describe them, "damn…I guess im a soft masc i never knew lmao."
