Shazam! Fury of the Gods is gearing up for its theatrical release next week and two of the screenwriters have confirmed that Pedro Peña, played by Jovan Armand/D.J. Cotrona, is gay.
Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan talked about inclusion and representation in an interview withDorkaholics, where Gayden revealed that "the only new addition for this movie is being a lot more forthright about Pedro being gay. And that was hinted at in the first movie very subtly. And I thought it was really important and really, really fought for us including that and bringing that to the fore in this movie."
In the original 2019 movie, the kids are transported inside a strip club. As they're walking out, Pedro says that it's "not [his] thing."
And the upcoming superhero film only gets gayer from there! Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren, and West Side Story's Rachel Zegler have joined the movie as the daughters of Atlas, Kalypso, Hespera, and Anthea, "who will come to Earth to reclaim the power taken from them, endangering all of humanity." The gays love a strong female villain!
Zachary Levi also reprises his role of Shazam alongside Billy Batson. Adam Brody, Megan Good, and Ross Butler have also joined the film.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods premieres March 17, 2023 in theaters. Watch the trailer below:
