There's a huge chunk of the queer community that loves geek culture. Is it the fabulous, colorful costumes? Is it the idea of having powers? Is it the beauty in seeing society's outcasts stand up for themselves and other fellow misfits? Is it all of the above? Who knows! What we do know is that gay nerds deserve all the love (and TV shows) in the world!
So this one's for all the LGBTQ geeks out there! If you have your streaming devices queued and need something new (and gay as hell) to watch, we've got you covered! Give these 16 series a try the next time you want to live your ultimate superhero/sci-fi fantasy!
The CW/Netflix
Supernatural started as a monster-of-the-week series that was only meant to last for five seasons. However, as its popularity grew, producers decided to carry on until the main actors, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, were finished. This ended up giving us 15 seasons worth of fighting demons with these two brothers, and as the show went on, it specifically made episodes tailored toward their dedicated fan base. Among the legion of fans is a massive LGBTQ+ community, and in the end, we even had one character admit his love for another to solidify what we all knew all along.

Merlin and Arthur off of BBC’s Merlin should have been a couple, but alas. Regardless, the five seasons we had of swash buckling adventures in the land of Camelot was still everything we needed for our fantasy fix. Although there aren’t any outwardly open LGBTQ+ characters, the camp, flamboyance, and general mishaps make this fit right in.

Doctor Who can be an intimidating show to get into, seeing as how it originally started in the 60’s, but don’t let that deter you. Every few seasons, the main characters change. Since the reboot restarted in 2005, characters like Clara Oswald and River Strong have had implications of bi and omnisexuality, and characters like Jack Harkness and Bill Potts are explicitly LGBT. The doctor is also finally played by a woman, and the Queen of all Queens, Jinkx Monsoon, is set to play a character in the upcoming season.

The super feminist, teen drama reboot of the beloved '90s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch also happens to feature a sexy AF pansexual warlock named Ambrose (played by Chance Perdomo), so of course this show is already on our watchlist!

The super popular Cartoon Network series is probably one of the most LGBT-inclusive animated children's shows to ever hit the airwaves. With all the boundaries they've broken, like when they made history in 2018 with Ruby and Sapphire's same-sex wedding, it's easy to see why the show is as popular and as critically-acclaimed as it is!

Part of The CW's popular Arrowverse, Legends of Tomorrow is another one of TV's queerest shows ever, and is jam-packed with multiple LGBT characters. It's hard to pick faves, but we definitely stan for the badass bisexual Sara Lance (aka White Canary, played by Caity Lotz), and John Constantine (played by Matt Ryan), another notable bi hero!

The Netflix reboot of Filmation's 1985 animated classic She-Ra: Princess of Power is incredibly empowering (especially for young girls) and has so much gay energy in it we can hardly keep up! While there are a lot of badass princesses to stan for in the series, our fave ship is probably that of Adora and her rival/frenemy Catra. That dance scene from the Princess Prom episode still has us swooning!!

Buffy is credited as featuring one of the first positive, on-screen representations of a lesbian couple in TV history! While a lot of the series obviously focused on Buffy and Spike or Buffy and Angel, honestly, Willow and Tara is definitely the main reason why we there is always a space for Buffy in our queer, geeky hearts

While Usagi Tsukino (better known to the world by her superhero alias Sailor Moon) is the star of the iconic, '90s anime series, the five-season, 200-episode magical girl saga also features some of the most badass lesbian (Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune) and transgender (the Sailor Starlights) heroes to ever grace the small screen!

Marvel's Runaways is a Hulu original series adapted from the comic book series of the same name that follows a group of superpowered teens who find out their parents are part of an evil organization called "The Pride." The show has some super queer moments, and made history in 2018 when it featured Marvel's first-ever, on-screen, same-sex kiss between two superheroes!

This animated series isn't as dramatic or serious as most of the other titles on this list, and it probably won't change your world view after watching it, but in a world full of bad news, pure, hilarious, and hella gay entertainment is exactly what we need right now. Drag Queens. Super powers. What else could you ever want in a series?!

Voltron: Legendary Defender made headlines in 2018 when it was announced that Shiro, one of the Netflix original series' main characters, was canonically queer. Unfortunately, all of that positive hype was undone when his love interest Adam was only given little-to-no screen time and was killed off, leaving fans feeling queer-baited. The show may not be perfect, but despite its glaring imperfections, it's entertaining AF and still worth a watch!

SYFY's Wynonna Earp combines elements of the science-fiction, Western, and horror/thriller genres to create a super addictive world we can't keep our eyes off of. It's also critical for us to mention that characters Waverly Earp, the sister of the titular Wynonna, and Officer Nicole Haught are pretty much relationship goals!! #WayHaught for life!!

The 100 is a dystopian series from the The CW that follows Clarke Griffin, a woman who is tasked with leading a group of 100 people to find out if the Earth is inhabitable after a nuclear apocalypse. Clarke is one of TV's few bisexual leads, and while it's worth noting that the show may have came under fire for employing the "bury your gays" trope in 2016, leaving a lot of fans feeling hurt, The 100 is still entertaining and a good watch, if only for the positive bisexual representation.

Another extremely LGBT-friendly offering from The CW, Supergirl introduced fans to Dreamer (aka Nia Nall, played by trans activist Nicole Maines), television's first transgender superhero in 2018. Alex Danvers' coming out arc in the show was also a huge landmark for lesbian representation!

The popular Freeform title, based off of author Cassandra Clare's bestselling book series The Mortal Instruments, features one of our fave queer TV couples of all time: Malec. (That's the ship name of Magnus Bane [played by Harry Shum Jr.] and Alec Lightwood [played by Matthew Daddario] for the uninitiated.) The show may be over, but at least we can still binge-watch all the precious Malec moments forever and ever and ever. *cries deeply*
