With only one month to go until the long-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally hits the big screen, Marvel Studios has released a brand new poster for the film — and we can’t help but notice who’s getting featured.
We’ve known from the start that the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would revolve heavily around Doctor Strange, of course, and Wanda Maximoff, but the introduction of America Chavez might be an even bigger deal than we were led to believe.
Chavez, who is a lesbian in the comics, is the third character featured prominently on the poster, getting her own spot just below the title.
There have been a lot of questions about her role in the film, and the trailers have barely given us a glimpse of the fan favorite character.
Fans have also been wondering how, or if, the MCU would deal with her queerness, as the films in general have been notoriously heternormative, and Disney, Marvel Studio’s parent company, doesn’t have a great track record with queer rep either. Some have even suggested that Chavez being aged down for the film may have been done in part to justify not identifying her as a lesbian but simply slapping a rainbow pin on her jacket and hoping the gays are satisfied.
But we’re ultimately not going to know what’s up with America until the film premieres on May 6. The fact that she’s front and (bottom) center on this new poster gives us hope that she’s destined for bigger and better things in the MCU, and if that’s the case, there’s a chance we’ll get an explicitly lesbian MCU superhero — maybe even with a love interest of her own — somewhere down the line.
