Allies come in all shapes, sizes, and ages, including one 12-year-old gamer who isn’t afraid to call out his fellow players when they voice homophobic nonsense.
In a video posted Thursday by TikTok user @bumblebee__, the TikToker’s brother can be seen defending them while playing Call of Duty: Warzone.
The video begins with him asking, “Do you seriously have a problem with people being gay?” before pausing and laying down the law by saying, “So you’re homophobic. So you just blatantly admit to being homophobic? You realize that means I automatically don’t like you because that’s really fucked up.”
After confirming his fellow players weren’t just kidding, he disclosed that his sister is a lesbian, and then in a follow-up video went on to explain that LGBTQ+ includes more than just “gay” people but also lesbian and trans individuals as well. He can then be heard trying to explain to his fellow players that trans folks aren’t necessarily gay. “I genuinely do care, and I want to have this argument, that’s fucked up,” he said. Give this kid an ally award!
Speaking to Daily Dot, @bumblebee__, expressed how proud they were of their brother when they accidentally overheard him being an LGBTQ+ ally by speaking up to other players, adding that they frequently have conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and the Black Lives Matter movement and “it was really nice knowing that he listens,” they said.
While the conversation with the other players reportedly didn’t end well, @bumblebee__ and their brother are getting plenty of support online. The video quickly went viral with over 98,000 likes on the original and more than 209,000 on the follow-up. “I was used to like getting maybe like 40 views max,” the TikToker said. “And then my phone just went off. It just kept going.”
Many suggested that @bumblebee__ use this opportunity to make some money, and in a subsequent video the sister-brother duo shared that they plan to do so and use the money to buy some new video games. However, most of the money will be donated to pro-LGBTQ+ groups including The Trevor Project and For Fox Sake, an LGBTQ-run wildlife rescue organization.
