It's always a good time for LGBTQ+ anime!
We are lucky enough to live in a time where queer representation is fairly common in media. Is it perfect? No of course not. Do we wish there were better, more nuanced, more diverse repression of the LGBTQ+ community? Of course.
But one form of media that has been ahead of the curve is anime. While it has not been perfect, gay anime and lesbian anime — known as shōnen ai (boys' love) and yuri (girls' love) — has been around for decades, beginning in the 1970s and ’80s with titles like Ai no Kusubi and Kaze to Ki no Uta, and Shōjo Kakumei Utena in the ‘90s. While these may have been trailblazing queer animes they have steadily gained steam until now, with titles like My Hero Academia, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Yuri!!! On Ice which sees an animated genre that is rife with LGBTQ+ heroes, villains, and lovers.
So, whether you're a die-hard anime fan looking for something you may have missed, or are new and just now getting into queer anime, here’s a list of series to help get you started, plus where you can stream them.
