9 Queer Superheroes Who Deserve Their Own Movie
These queer heroes deserve their own big-screen blockbusters!
Despite the lack of explicitly queer superheroes on screen, there are a surprising number of great LGBTQ+ heroes out there, and any one of them would be great for a badass movie trilogy! (If we can have three different Peter Parkers in the span of 15 years, can we please get at least one explicitly queer hero movie?! Looking at you Marvel...)
Here are just a few we'd love to see on the big screen!
Midnighter & Apollo
Midnighter and Apollo wrapped up their own comic series in 2017, and the duo make quite the team. Midnighter has been engineered to have some pretty incredible abilities, including the ability to predict every move his opponent may try to pull. Apollo, on the other hand, is reminiscent of Superman, as a superhuman with super-strength, heat vision, and many other abilities, all tied to the energy from the sun. In one telling of their story, the pair were the only surviving members of a black-ops team and went on to fall in love and eventually adopt a daughter. Their story is practically made for the big screen!
Batwoman
Kate Kane, the current incarnation of Batwoman, is a lesbian who was kicked out of West Point after falling in love with her roommate. She spent years after that partying in Gotham before she realized she needed to find something to do with her life. Just like Gotham’s other famous big partier, Kate decided to go into the vigilante business. After Batman’s death, Batwoman became one of the protectors of Gotham City in his absence, a story which would make an excellent alternative trip to Gotham City we haven’t yet been able to see. After actor Ruby Rose's departure, Kate only got one season to shine in The CW's Batwoman series, so it would be nice to see more of the character in her own dedicated solo film.
Iceman
Yes, Bobby Drake’s Iceman has appeared in a few of the (many) X-Men films, but that was all before the revelation that Bobby was, in fact, gay. Bobby’s coming out story would be a pretty incredible movie as it has all the things a great X-Men movie needs: confusing time travel, kids learning about their powers, and Jean Grey. During a meeting between adult and kid versions of some of the X-Men, both Jean Grey and his younger version confront Bobby about his sexuality, allowing him to come to terms and come out. (Let's just hope an actual queer actor would get to play the role...)
Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy
There wasn’t much that was very good about Suicide Squad, but we did get Harley Quinn out of it! Luckily we got to see and learn more about her (and her queerness) in Birds of Prey, and hopefully one day, we'll get to see a more of her and Poison Ivy together in a live-action movie. Harley and Ivy have always had a...close relationship, one that was read by many as the two being together, despite Harley’s love for The Joker. The pair were confirmed as a couple when they shared a kiss in DC’s Bombshells.
Catwoman
Selina Kyle is another character we’ve seen on film more than once and that's always been suspected to not be completely straight, despite her on-and-off relationship with Bruce Wayne/Batman. A few years ago, DC confirmed that everyone’s favorite cat burglar is, in fact, bisexual, with a kiss between her and Eiko Hasigawa, the woman who took up the Catwoman persona when Selina stepped away. We can't wait to see how Zoë Kravitz portrays her alongside Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' upcoming DC flick The Batman, but it would be nice for her to get her own spotlight again (since that 2004 trainwreck of a movie starring Halle Berry did the Selina character absolutely no favors).
Northstar
As one of the first openly gay heroes in mainstream comics, Jean-Paul Beaubier’s Northstar deserves his time on screen. Originally part of the Canadian super team Alpha Flight, Northstar eventually went on to join the X-Men and even married his husband in an issue of the comic book in 2012. While as a mutant his powers are similar to the already popular Quicksilver, adding him to the roster of X-Men films could give the series a much-needed breath of fresh air.
Deadpool
Deadpool made quite the splash when he appeared on the comic book movie scene in 2016. Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the “Merc with a Mouth” was largely praised, and the movie even got some credit for having a pansexual character, though if you didn’t know that about the character, it was pretty much impossible to tell (unless you count wearing a RENT shirt and a Bea Arthur shirt as confirmation of someone’s sexuality). Reynolds has said he would love for Deadpool to get a boyfriend in an upcoming film, so there may be some hope.
Constantine
On the surface, the character seems perfect for a movie. Dealing with the more magical side of DC’s universe, Constantine is a detective for the occult and fits pretty well into the antihero mold. But after a film in 2005 starring Keanu Reeves and an NBC TV show that only lasted one season, John Constantine can’t seem to find a good vehicle. John even showed up on season 4 of Arrow and is a main character on the Arrowverse's Legends of Tomorrow, and though there has been acknowledgment of his bisexuality (finally!), we still want to see more of that and him in his own film.
America Chavez
America Chavez, or Miss America, is a bilingual badass from an alternate reality (because comic books) who was raised by her two moms and can kick butt with the best of them. America’s story is the perfect next step for Marvel in their cinematic universe, especially since in one version of Captain America's future, it’s none other than America Chavez who takes over the mantle. Chris Evans who?? While we'd love to see her get the big, box-office treatment, it's nice to know she's at least getting her own series made for Disney+ sometime soon in the near future.
