While it wasn't a super huge box office success, Lionsgate's live-action, 2017 Power Rangers filmdid a pretty decent when it came to creating a cast of modern characters from incredibly diverse backgrounds. Of the movie's five main leads, four were people of color, two were women, one was on the autism spectrum, and one (the Yellow Ranger named Trini, played by Becky G) hinted at being queer, even talking (very briefly) about exploring/dealing with her sexuality on-screen.
Although an upcoming Power Rangers film has now been confirmed at Paramount, we don't know much else about it what's going on for the future of the long-running, beloved superhero franchise. But rumor has it that there will be a ton of opportunities for future films to still be diverse, especially when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusion—specifically in the form of a transgender Power Ranger.
According to a source reported by the We Got This Covered blog, Paramount is looking to, yet again, reboot the Power Rangers movie franchise, and in keeping with the spirit of inclusivity that the 2017 film set, the studio is also looking to add a trans woman character into the mix of high school heroes.
While the possibility of adding even more diversity into the Power Rangers universe is an exciting prospect, especially since the queer aspect of the Yellow Ranger was barely explored in 2017 and left a short, bitter taste in many queer fans' mouths, it's worth noting that the source in WGTC is anonymous, so we have to take this news with a grain of salt.
So we'll just have to wait and see if Hollywood truly is ready to give the trans community the representation they deserve and need in superhero media. Hopefully, we won't be disappointed!
