Thor 4 Taika Waititi is speaking up about whether or not Valkyrie will be queer in the next Thor film, and it’s…a little confusing.
The Oscar award winning director was recently asked by Variety if he would like for Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who is bisexual in the comics, to be openly queer in the next film.
“I think so,” he said. “The IP is not mine. But with the actors, I feel whatever makes them comfortable — whether they feel like there’s a natural choice, or a natural way for that character to go — then I’m pretty supportive.”
He added: “If Tessa wanted to do that, I’m in.”
Thompson has repeatedly not only expressed her desire for Valkyrie to be explicitly queer, but insisted she played her as though she was in her previous Marvel films.
Specifically, with Valkyrie stepping up as King of New Asgard in the upcoming Thor film, Thompson said at Comic Con: “First of all, as king, she needs to find her queen. That will be the first order of business.” (And we already know fans want it to be Carol Danvers.)
Meanwhile, Marvel boss Kevin Feige previously told io9 Valkyrie was definitely going to have a queer storyline in Thor 4.
So to hear Waititi say he “thinks” he wants Valkyrie to be explicitly queer — in the same interview in which he reveals there have already been several drafts of the script written — is a little jarring. But hopefully he’s just keeping his cards close, because if Marvel backtracks on bisexual Valkyrie now, we riot at dawn.
