Is a Sony Film With a Bisexual Spider-Man in the Works?
The rumor mill says...
Asking if we’re ever getting a queer Spider-Man has become about as hollow of a question as asking if Elsa from Frozen is finally getting a girlfriend. We all know it should happen, but the corporate overlords who hold the rights seem content to live in their heteronormative worlds. And yet the rumor mills keep churning.
So here we go again — Are we getting a bisexual Spider-Man?
According to We Got This Covered, anonymous sources close to the studio have claimed Sony is looking into creating a live action Spider-Man movie that unites its three iconic actors: Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.
And the intent would be for Garfield’s Spider-Man to be bisexual and have a boyfriend.
While Holland has previously gone on record several times as saying Spider-Man could totally be gay, it was Garfield who said he spoke with then-director Marc Webb about having the iconic Peter Parker explore his sexuality. He even went so far as to suggest Michael B. Jordan for the boyfriend.
However, we know from the infamous email leak that Sony put intense restrictions on Spidey’s identity when they loaned the web-slinger to Marvel for its live action films. Specifically, Spider-Man had to be both heterosexual and played by a white actor. So much for diversity.
The film Into the Spider-Verse saw the mantle picked up by Miles Morales, but that was animation, and only stepped around making the character white.
So the idea that Sony would be willing to make not only a version of Spider-Man queer, but specifically the ever iconic Peter Parker? I’ll stay skeptical ’til we see some dudes upside-down kissing in the rain.
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
