Here's All the Best Stuff Disney Announced at D23 Expo 2019
Disney's upcoming live-action and animated film slate is jam-packed with amazing stuff!
Tons and tons of Disney's most loyal and dedicated stans packed the Convention Center in Anaheim, California this weekend for D23 Expo, the ultimate convention for people who eat, sleep, and breathe Disney.
On Saturday morning, Disney Studios held a panel in Hall D23 to announce their upcoming slate of live-action, animated, Marvel, and Star Wars movies, and those in attendance were delighted at all of the new films to look forward to in the next few years!
Here's a look at all of the cool stuff that was announced at D23 on Saturday morning!
A new poster and trailer for 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.'
Director J.J. Abrams and the entire cast of Disney's Star Wars saga unveiled a gorgeous, brand new poster for the last film in this current trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker. A new trailer for the highly-anticipated space opera was also screened at Saturday morning's D23 Expo panel, and some new footage reveals Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) donning a black hood and wielding a red lightsaber. Could our heroine have turned to the Dark Side?
More superstars are joining the cast of 'The Eternals!'
Aside from an already stacked cast that includes Oscar winner Angelina Jolie and Oscar nominee Salma Hayek, Marvel Studios' upcoming The Eternals will also feature Captain Marvel and Crazy Rich Asians alum Gemma Chan, and Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington. We're excited for this title, because rumor has it the film promises an explicitly queer hero!
The release date of 'Black Panther 2' has officially been announced!
We didn't get an official title or any footage, but director Ryan Coogler was at D23 Expo to personally announce the release date of his sequel to the groundbreaking, Oscar-nominated MCU film: May 6, 2022.
Some badass footage from the 'Black Widow' standalone film.
Although her time with The Avengers is over, especially after her Endgame death, Black Widow fans are in for a treat when they finally get to see the footage screened at D23 Expo. Midsommar's Florence Pugh, Oscar-winning The Favourite star Rachel Weisz, and Stranger Things' David Harbour all join Scarlett Johansson as one, big, not-so-happy family that knows how to kick some serious ass, and the action scenes in Black Widow will surely be some of the best in the entire MCU.
New clips from 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' prove two queens are better than one.
Angelina Jolie graced the Hall D23 stage for a second time on Saturday to talk about and reveal footage from Mistress of Evil the sequel to 2014's live-action Maleficent film. She was joined by her costars Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The dialogue between Jolie and Pfeiffer's regal, queenly characters is pure camp, and we can't wait to see what antics those two drum up for each other, all in time for Halloween!
A new 'Mulan' clip!
Some new footage from the upcoming, live-action adaptation of Mulan (starring controversial actress Liu Yifei) shows a very different story than the one told in the animated version from 1998. There's still no music, the action/fight scenes look crazy good, and our titular heroine now has a sister!
Tom Holland is still part of the Disney family.
Despite all the drama between Sony and Disney/Marvel and the uncertainty about his place in the MCU, Spider-Man: Far From Home star Tom Holland made a surprise appearance at D23 Expo to talk about his role as Ian in the upcoming Pixar flick Onward! The fans in the crowd at the panel went wild for him! "It’s been a crazy week...I love you 3000," Holland said when he left the stage.
An original, gorgeous, and brand-new fantasy movie inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia!
Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements at Saturday's D23 Expo panel was that of Raya and the Last Dragon, an original fantasy title that draws tons of inspiration from the cultures of Southeast Asia. Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim was joined by stars Cassie Steele and Awkwafina to talk about what is sure to be an instant classic, and a groundbreaking moment for Asian representation in Western animation.
We get to know more about Anna and Elsa's mother in 'Frozen 2!'
Westworld star and openly bi actress Evan Rachel Wood is playing Anna and Elsa's mother in the (possibly queer?) sequel to the 2013 animated hit, and she even gets to show off her vocal chops in a new song!
Emma Stone gets all dolled up on the first look at 'Cruella!'
Oscar-winning La La Land actress Emma Stone gets painted up and wigged out in the first still from the upcoming 101 Dalmations reboot, Cruella. Glenn Close would be so proud!
