Marvel Exec Wants Gay Superheros in the MCU

"The world is ready, the world is ready."

If you've been paying even the tiniest bit of attention to pop culture over the last decade, you've proabably at least heard of the adventures of Earth's mightiest heros, The Avengers, and their endeavours within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the MCU has a wide range of intergalactic diversity, including heroes from other planets, heroes played by every Chris in exsistence, and even a racoon, LGBTQ+ audiences have, for the most part, sadly been left out of the MCU's roster. But Marvel Studios' production chief Victoria Alonso has hope that very much-needed change is on its way.

According to a recent interview with Variety, the Marvel exec thinks audiences are ready to see queer superheroes on the big screen and that the time has come for an openly gay character to enter the playing field.

"The world is ready, the world is ready," she said at the recent premiere of Captain Marvel.

Alonso also noted that Marvel does strive to fairly represent all people, inclusive of gender and color.

"Why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we be?" Alonso said when Variety asked her about the studio's commitment to diversity in its movie offerings. "I’m so passionate about this I’ve got to tell you. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies."

While she did not comment further on the top secret projects in development at Marvel that might be involving an LGBTQ+ lead, we can take a bit of solace knowing that the issue is one that the execs are aware of. We can also speculate as to what titles would involve a queer lead, such as the upcoming Eternals movie (which would be the perfect property to introduce gay characters in, as not many details are known about that particular project!).

So will we finally get to see a big budget LGBT superhero movie hit theaters in the near future? Only time will tell!
