They'll be the first major LGBT hero in a superhero movie!
MINOR SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD!
According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Lionsgate film reboot of the beloved Power Rangers franchise will feature a queer character, making it the "first big-budget superhero movie to feature an LGBT protagonist."
As THR reports, the movie has a scene in which the rest of the young cast learns about character Trini (aka the Yellow Ranger, played by singer-actress Becky G) and her efforts to come to terms with her sexuality.
"For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," Power Rangers director Dean Israelite said in a statement to the trade publication. "She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."
The news of the addition of a queer Power Ranger comes on the heels of the recent release of Beauty and the Beast, another nostalgic movie for queer '90s kids, and their inclusion of LeFou, Disney's first gay live-action movie character.
We were already excited for the release of Power Rangers, but now that we know Becky G's character is a part of the LGBT community, we can't wait for this Friday, March 24 when the movie hits theaters!
