5 Quintessential Queer Video Game Characters We Love
Nintendo's recent 3DS release, Fire Emblem: Fates, took a major step when they created three queer characters for the game. This is a big move for Nintendo, who has historically been a bit skittish about anything LGBTQ.
And, frankly, most of the video game world has been a bit skittish about LGBTQ inclusion. Trying to come up with a list of recognizable queer video game characters just goes to show how few there are, and how far we still have to go in the gaming community.
However, baby steps have been made. In honor of Nintendo's inclusion, let's take a look at some of our favorite (and some of the only) queer video games characters over the years.
Poison (Final Fight)
Sure, there's some debate about whether Poison is or isn't transgendered, but she's too fierce not to be queer, right?
Juhani (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
This Jedi bad-ass was the first Star Wars lesbian!
Kung Jin (Mortal Kombat X)
A relative newcomer to the Mortal Kombat universe, this Shaolin monk was confirmed gay by the game's creator.
Jacob Frye (Assassin's Creed Syndicate)
Yep, this Victorian-era assassin has been confirmed bisexual.
You! (Fallout, The Sims, Mass Effect, Fable and more)
RPGs and games that allowed you to customize your character have typically been the ones paving the way for queer inclusion in gaming. After all, it's about finding yourself in the characters you're playing, right? Let's just hope this trend continues.
Now, these aren't the only queer video game characters out there, but a list like this should be a lot longer, with many more recognizable names and faces.
