Disney Channel Is Debuting It's First Ever Openly Gay Story Line
The Disney Channel, long known to be a respectively conservative outlet in regards to televised diversity (especially with LGBTQIA+ representation), just announced that their upcoming second season of Andi Mack will feature the channel's first openly gay character and storyline.
After consulting with child development experts to ultimately craft a more inclusive environment for their shows, the cable network dropped the news that the upcoming season of Andi Mack would deal with a primary castmember, Cyrus (Joshua Rush), developing feelings for his friend Jonah (Asher Angel). This is a major game changer for the network and for LGBT representation in youth geared television content. Not only will the show address Cyrus's sexuality, but will also feature his coming out to, and unwavering emotional support from his friend Buffy (Sofia Wylie).
The Disney company also released a statement addressing their views on inclusivity.
“The Disney brand has always been inclusive, with stories that reflect acceptance and tolerance and celebrate the differences that make our characters uniquely wonderful in their own way. We constantly strive to live up to that legacy by continuing to create and share compelling storylines from our studios and media networks that entertain with inspirational and aspirational themes and reflect the incredibly rich diversity of the human experience. Our stories are timeless because they speak to the heart; our characters appeal to children across gender, ability, and experience because they’re defined by kindness, loyalty, humor, courage, wit, and other traits that make a good friend. Disney remains committed to continuing to create characters that are accessible and related to all children.”
Andi Mack's season premieres this Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m.
