A new Spanish show on Netflix is the adorable rom-com series we've been waiting for this holiday season. Titled Smiley, the show quietly premiered on the streaming platform last Friday, December 7th, and is spreading like wildfire – and it's well worth the subtitled watch!
The series takes place in Barcelona opens with the player bartender Álex, played by Carlos Cuevas, leaving a heated voicemail for a guy that ghosted him – but he accidentally calls the wrong number. Unsuspecting architect Bruno receives the message and is strangely charmed by it, which leads him to call Álex back and set up a date.
But the two couldn't be more different in their eyes: one's a shallow jock bartender and another is an introverted achitect. They fight about etiquette and movies and everything else, but in a classic opposites attractions situation, they hook up and it's the best sex either of them have ever had.
Unfortunately, both refuse to make the first move the next morning and let the moment pass, which results in the messiest will-they-won't-they we've seen in a minute, especially when new romantic interests Ibra and Ramon enter the picture. These two guys are both more similar to our respective leads. Álex and Bruno try to convince themselves their better off with the guys who match their energy, but the heart wants what it wants...
The two lead an incredible ensemble cast. Álex works at the bar with Vero, a workaholic who is having relationship problems with her partner, Patricia. The two women are gearing up to move in together but Vero doesn't seem excited, leading Patricia to eventually suggest trying an open relationship to reignite things. Oh yeah, and Patricia isn't out to her parents... and they make a surprise visit. Mess.
Without giving too much plot away, we also get a tender love story between some of the older characters on the show. Álex and his mom are still mourning his dad's death when an old friend comes into town with a secret. And we also meet the hilarious bar owner, Javier, who charms with ease and gives us some hilarious drag performances.
Though the series is in Spanish, it's a fun watch just in time for the holidays — and it's slowly making its way around the world by word of mouth.
Now here's to hoping we get a season two...
