This year’s Carol Burnett Award winner — an award given for the highest level of achievement in television — is family.

Today, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that this year’s recipient is Ryan Murphy, a creator who not only has made hit after hit show, but he’s done it in a way that centers the stories and lives of queer people with series like Glee, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, Halston, and, of course, Pose.

“Ryan Murphy not only continues to enthrall audiences with his work on some of the most thrilling and exciting series of the century but also continues to inspire all with his work off the screen,” said Helen Hoehne, President of the HFPA in a press release. “His work and storytelling ability throughout different film and television genres have led to highly acclaimed achievements and awards.”

The Carol Burnett Award is a counterpart to the Cecil B. DeMille Award (this yea's winner is Eddie Murphy) and has previously been awarded to Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres, and Norman Lear. The honoree is selected “based on their body of work and the lasting impact that their television career achievements have had on both the industry and audiences.” Even a glance at Murphy’s credits shows that he is certainly deserving of this recognition.

Murphy is an Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony, and Peabody Award-winning screenwriter, producer, and director who was responsible for making series like Popular, Nip/Tuck, American Crime Story, Feud, and 9-1-1.

In recent years he’s written, directed, and/or produced several series for Netflix, including Halston, Hollywood,The Politician, Ratched, The Andy Warhol Diaries,The Watcher, and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

That’s not to mention his various contributions to film including The Boys in the Band, The Normal Heart, Running with Scissors, Eat, Pray, Love, and The Prom.

So yeah, it’s fair to say he’s earned the accolade.

Murphy is set to accept the honor at the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
