'Project Runway' Returns For a Super Gay All-Stars Season
Project Runway is back for its 20th season on Bravo. Somehow, the long-running reality competition series has gotten even more queer!
For many years, Project Runway was home to diverse LGBTQ+ representation, with even the early years of the show having multiple queer contestants each season. Moreover, recent seasons also included trans and nonbinary models. As it returns for another All-Stars cycle with season 20, the show has gotten even better, with more than half of the contestants are queer.
Project Runway deserves more credit for being one of the first shows to cast seven or eight queer people in a single season who’d otherwise be considered too similar to be on the same season of any other reality show.
This time around, 14 fan-favorite designers are being brought back for a brand new all-star season. Project Runway All-Stars is a spinoff of the popular fashion design-competition show that ran for seven seasons on Lifetime before returning to Bravo.
Season four winner and successful designer Christian Siriano will be back as the mentor, a position he took over after Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn left to make the Amazon Prime show Making the Cut in 2018. Judges Brandon Maxwell, Elaine Welteroth, and Nina Garcia will also be returning to offer up their classic snarky critiques.
Alongside new challenges, expect to see classics like the unconventional materials challenge and the denim challenge. The returning designers will also be tasked with creating new uniforms for the yachties from Below Deck and Bravolebrities Lee Rosebach and Sandy Yawn are even stopping by to make cameos.
There’s also a new slate of guest judges including Billy Porter (Siriano designed the actor’s iconic tuxedo dress), actor Coleman Domingo, designer Zac Posen, legendary stylist Law Roach and Wes Gordon, who designed Lena Waith’s memorable 2018 Met Gala Pride cape.
Viewers will also be treated to fashion critiques from LGBTQ+ allies like Clueless star Alicia Silverstone, 90210 alum Jennie Garth, artist and Uncut Gems actor Julia Fox, supermodel Paulina Porizkova and former Real Housewives of New York City star Luann de Lesseps.
The designers will all be competing for the top prize of $250,000, a mentorship from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and a feature in Elle magazine.
And if you’re dying to know which of your favorite designers are returning, thankfully Bravo has released the list. The all-star designers are Brittany Allen (Season 18), Prajje Oscar Jean Baptiste (Season 19), Laurence Basse (Season 15), Fabio Costa (Season 10), Bishme Cromartie (Season 17), Johnathan Kayne Gillaspie (Season 3), Mila Hermanovski (Season 7), Rami Kashou (Season 4), Viktor Luna (Season 9), Korto Momolu (Season 5), Nora Pagel (Season 1), Kara Saun (Season 1), Hester Sunshine (Season 17), and Anna Yinan Zhou (Season 19).
Season 20 of Project Runway premieres June 15 on Bravo and will also stream on Peacock.
