HBO Max has been slashing projects left and right, which is why fans should breathe a (slight) sigh of relief that season two of Our Flag Means Death has officially wrapped.
Creator and showrunner David Jenkins made the announcement on Twitter late Monday night, writing, “That’s a wrap my dudes,” along side a photo of what appears to be Stede Bonnet’s ship.
Our Flag Means Death season one ended on a bittersweet note, with the unlikely lovers (Rhys Darby’s Stede and Taika Waitit’s Blackbeard) separated, and Blackbeard having betrayed the person he had become with Stede’s companionship on the high seas.
Where things will go from here has been kept under wraps for the time being, but it sounds as if we can expect the majority of the primary cast to return.
And that is enough for fans to stay hyped about whatever’s next.
Of course, we’ve learned all too well that a project completing production is no guarantee it will actually be released when it comes to Warner Bros. following the chaotic merger with Discovery.
Just this week, season two of Minx was yanked at the very end of production, reversing a season two order along with a decision to remove the first season off HBO Max entirely. It seems to be a new trend with WBD projects, leaving fans of anything tied to the company anxious about the future.
Hopefully the same fate won’t befall Our Flag Means Death, but as for a season three…well, with a company acting so jarringly against their own longterm interests, it’s difficult to predict where the gay pirates might end up when the dust settles.
