The Upside Down is expanding inside out.
In 2022, Stranger Things was renewed for a fifth and final season. While fans eagerly wait for these new episodes to drop on Netflix, the Duffer Brothers are already planning to expand the franchise even further.
On Monday, April 10, the Duffer Brothers announced an animated series adaptation of Stranger Things. “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” Matt and Ross Duffer wrote in a joint statement. “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with – the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues.”
Last year, Netflix released a series of animated YouTube videos titled “Stranger Morning Cartoons.” Even though this felt like a one-off marketing tactic at the time, we’re now going to get a full Stranger Things animated series on the streaming service.
But that’s not all! Besides this newly-announced animated series, the Duffer Brothers are also working on a live-action Stranger Things spinoff that is supposedly not based on any of the characters that we’ve already met on the show.
There’s also a stage play coming to London’s West End titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This production is set to further explain the origin story of Vecna, and will feature younger versions of characters like Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper.
Fans are already mourning the end of Stranger Things as a TV show, but it looks like there’s plenty of new content coming from the hit Netflix franchise in the next few years. Needless to say, we’re excited to keep revisiting Hawkins and the Upside Down!
Stranger Things is available for streaming on Netflix.
