A gay U.S. marine dramedy is headed to Netflix, with Miles Heizer taking the lead.
The Corps is an upcoming adaptation of Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine: One Boy’s Journey Through Bootcamp to Manhood, which sees the author decide to follow his straight best friend to boot camp in 1979, despite the military’s pointed stance against gay people serving at the time.
Heizer, most recently known for his portrayal of Alex Standall in 13 Reasons Why, will play the lead character, here renamed Cameron Cope, with relative newcomer Liam Oh taking on the role of his best friend, Ray McCaffey. According to Deadline, the time period will shift to 1990, which still pre-dated the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era of the military.
After posting the announcement to his Instagram stories on Monday, Heizer also shared a photo of himself with his head shaved, presumably for the role.
Ten episodes of The Corps have been ordered so far, with Andy Parker — who previously worked as a writer and producer on Netflix’s Tales of the City and Bravo’s Imposters — serving as showrunner.
Additionally, Max Parker (Vampire Academy) has been cast as Cope’s Marine sergeant, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) will play his mother, and Zach Roerig, Ana Ayora, Cedrick Cooper, Angus O’Brien, Dominic Goodman, and Kieron Moore are among the remaining cast members who have been announced thus far.
With Hollywood currently in limbo over the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ failure to come to an agreement on updated working terms with the Writers Guild of America, it is unclear when production could begin on the series.
