The upcoming Glee docuseries from Discovery+ was controversial from the moment it was announced, but now former cast members are speaking out against it.
When the trailer for The Price of Glee was released last week, prior claims that “key cast and crew members” were involved in the making of the series were immediately thrown into question. While Naya Rivera’s father was among those featured, no interviews with actual cast members, or creator Ryan Murphy, were teased.
Moreover, the salacious, tabloid-esque nature of the docuseries, seemingly focusing on the tragedies that rocked the cast, didn’t sit well with a lot of people — although others were intrigued.
Kevin McHale was quick to hit back at those who may fall into the latter category, suggesting no cast members were involved at all and that the docuseries is nothing but trash.
Fellow former cast member Jenna Ushkowitz, who co-hosts a Glee podcast with McHale, replied to his tweet with a grimacing emoji of her own. She had previously told In Touch Weekly that the cast is “not really associated with [the docuseries],” a sentiment echoed at the time by McHale, who added that “you don’t necessarily want to give something more attention than it maybe deserves or needs.”
Chord Overstreet had also spoken out about The Price of Glee recently, saying that “nobody knows anything about that,” referring to the cast.
“I think it’s a little bit of like just trying to get people to watch something,” he said. “I don’t think anybody really knows anything about it. I think it’s just like a tabloid thing trying to sell.”
The Price of Glee premieres on Investigation Discovery and Discovery+ on January 16 — although it might be something actual Glee fans want to skip.
