The first look at Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey in their new gay historical romance has finally arrived—and will leave fans of either actor eager for the series to make its debut.
Fellow Travelers is based on the Thomas Mallon novel of the same name, and follows Hawkins Fuller (Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (Bailey) through the world of politics over the span of decades, starting in the 1950s during the height of McCarthyism, all the way through to the 1980s AIDS crisis.
The series, helmed by My Policemanwriter Ron Nyswaner, was ordered to series by Showtime and completed filming last year. It also stars Allison Williams, Jelani Alladin, Noah J. Ricketts, and Linus Roache.
Vanity Fairwas given the exclusive first look at Bomer and Bailey’s characters in the series, highlighting some of the key moments in their relationship.
Bomer called filming the series a “profound experience,” while Bailey admitted he jumped at the chance to do a “sweeping gay love story,” something he had never really seen before.
And producer Robbie Rogers praised the show for pushing boundaries when it comes to showing intimacy between two men.
“Not that it will be shocking to people, but I hope when people watch it, they’re like, ‘Oh, wow. They really went for it,’” he told Vanity Fair.
“Every single sex scene is a meticulous examination of power,” Bailey added. “To me, being queer also is about, as two men, how you negotiate your giving of your body to the other person. That is something that I’ve always yearned to see properly done because I know how extraordinary it is to experience it.”
A specific airdate hasn’t yet been set for Fellow Travelers, but it is expected sometime this fall.
