With every update, we get more excited about the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials. While much has remained shrouded in secrecy, we’ve got our best look yet at the super-camp and awesomely queer three-part special with a new trailer.
David Tennant and Catherine Tate return to reprise their role as The Doctor and Donna Noble, respectively, but joining them this time around are Heartstoppers’ Yasmin Finney as the companion Rose and Neil Patrick Harris as a top-hat-wearing villain.
In the trailer, we see both of these characters make their debut. Harris notably rocks a top hat and tux and does a little dance with Tennant’s Doctor. Let the fan fic writing begin!
While the plot and Harris’ characters remain a mystery, fans now know that the three special episodes are titled “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle.”
“The titles are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet,” showrunner Russell T. Davies teased in a statement. “Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna, and disaster about to be unleashed!”
Following the three-part special, a new Doctor arrives and Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson are set to make their debut as the Timelord and their companion, respectively, sometime near the Christmas holiday season.
The upcoming era of Doctor Who is shaping up to be a truly queer epic. As previously announced, Jinkx Monsoon has been cast as a “significant character” in the upcoming special. Out actor and all-around gay hottie Jonathan Groff will star as a mystery guest in the upcoming season. Plus, trans actor Pete MacHale has recently been cast, marking the first time in the series’ long history that a trans man has starred on the show.
The anniversary specials are set to arrive this November. Watch the teaser trailer below.
