Doctor Who just added Jonathan Groff to its list of guest stars, which includes Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon, making this the gayest season ever!
Groff, who has been in everything from Hamilton to Glee is set to play a key role in the much-beloved sci-fi series alongside Ncuti Gatwa, who will become the next Doctor.
"This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to get such a huge star striding on to our set," Showrunner Russell T. Davies said in a statement. "So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!"
Since his breakout roles on Broadway, Glee, and Looking, Groff has gone on to great success, starring in Mindhunter, The Matrix Resurrections, and most recently, the M. Night Shyamalan thriller Knock at the Cabin.
While we don’t know anything about the character he’ll be playing opposite the Doctor, Groff has had the opportunity to play gay characters on TV and the big screen in the past. In fact, it was a role on a TV show that helped him after he came out of the closet when he was 23.
In an interview with Out, Groff admitted that he struggled after coming out, "I came out of the closet and I was still feeling quite shameful for many years."
But it wasn’t until he played a gay character in the 2014 tv show Looking and was surrounded by gay people that he started to love himself. "When I did Looking, I was playing a gay character on a set with a lot of gay people,” Groff said in the interview. “I started to fall in love with who I was for the first time. It was really that experience that really turned the corner for me."
The BBC hasn't given any details about Groff’s mystery guest spot, except to say that he will “jump aboard the TARDIS.” Hopefully, that means he’s playing a friend of the new Time Lord.
