With a third season of Bridgerton around the corner, fans are revisiting their hopes and dreams for the future. For some, that means wishing for more inclusivity — and the author of the original book series agrees.
Both the Netflix series and the original novels by Julia Quinn have been overwhelmingly heterosexual, but Quinn now says she’s supportive of the idea of the show switching things up to have an LGBTQ+ protagonist.
“One of the things that the series has done remarkably is to perfectly mimic the kind of emotions you feel when you read a romance novel,” she told Cosmopolitan Spain last year. “They make you feel good, and the main reason is because they show a world in which anyone has the right to be happy.
“Being more inclusive, casting without racial bias, all of that contributes to that feeling.”
Quinn did note, however, that she isn’t involved in the creative direction of the show itself, and only sees the scripts when they’re finished. So whether or not a queer love story gets added into the mix is ultimately up to the incoming showrunner for season 3, Jess Brownell, and the rest of the creative team.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all [to have an LGBTQ+ protagonist], but I don’t know anything about whether they’re going to do it,” Quinn clarified.
Brownell previously ruffled feathers by saying she was too focused on the heterosexual leads of the third season to consider adding queer characters for the time being, something fans are still hoping changes sooner rather than later.
A release date for season three has yet to be set, although there have been unconfirmed rumors production was delayed over disagreements about the storyline.
