If you’re a woman in the world there’s a 98 to 99-percent chance that at some point in your life you’ve been told to smile. It’s one of those things that women just mostly endure, unless of course you opt to speak out about it at the risk of being told or called something worse by the purveyor of the smile request. Well, after Hillary Clinton’s big speech for her wins on Super Tuesday pundits said she should smile more, and Ellen DeGeneres is not happy about it.

"She gave a very passion speech, and then someone, I don’t want to say it was a man, because it was a bunch of men – they said that Hillary needs to smile more," Ellen says in her opening monologue for her show. "Here’s something you should never tell a woman – smile, relax, calm down, or drink less."

Ellen then points to pictures of angry or impassioned candidates Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump, pointing out the double standard that they aren’t being told to smile.

As usual, when Ellen goes on a rant, she laces it with gentle humor to soften the blow.

"I know Hillary, and I know there are plenty of things that make her smile – like her daughter, her granddaughter, when there’s a sale on pantsuits," Ellen says, grinning.

At the end, Ellen has a pretty universal message regarding smilegate.

"I’m not against smiling. I think we should all do it more – women, men, cats, Clint Eastwood... But we should do it on our own terms," she says.

Watch the entire monologue here, but that Trump photo should probably come with some sort of trigger warning.
