It's time for a queer sex education lesson! You never got one in school, so why not now?
The It Gets Better Project has teamed up with media outlet Into and dating app Hornet for a new series titled Queer Sex Ed to create a space where real-life friends have "conversations about queer sex, sex in the media, consent and pleasure, and more — while two professional sex educators listen in to educate and bust some myths!"
The first episode dropped today, and we get to watch three friends talk about consent, pronouns, body image, and separating the reality of sex from the movies and porn we watch and how those fantasies affect us, alongside experts Melina Gaze and Dr. Lexx.

"So many of us learn about sex through porn," Gaze points out. But while the audience may only see the action shot, there are actually consent forms and testing and negotiation happening behind the scenes. "Developing that porn literacy can be really important to undoing some of the messages we may be getting from mainstream porn," especially when it comes to ideas of what sex "should" look like that we then internalize.
The group goes on to have a vulnerable conversation about one person's sexual assault and what it feels like to now reconstruct a sense of safety and control in their relationship. "I think it's really important for me and for others to feel comfortable speaking up about what they like and don't like. Specifically, if you want to stop at any point. There's a lot of pressure that if you start, you can't stop til you reach a certain goal." That's not always the case, and we should all be able to feel comfortable withdrawing consent whenever.
The conversation becomes a healing space for the group, and an educational one for those at home. Four more episodes are on the way, and we can't wait to see how they turn out!
