Paul Reubens has passed away at 70 years of age.
Best known for originating the character of Pee-wee Herman, Reubens had been privately fighting cancer for six years. The news was shared by his team on the official social media pages for Pee-wee Herman.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens,” the official statement reads. “An iconic American actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy, and belief in the importance of kindness.”
Adding, “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
The official social media post also included a message from Reubens himself. “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” the actor wrote. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
Reubens is most notable for the 1985 film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure directed by Tim Burton, the long-running CBS series Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and the Netflix original movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday released in 2016. With Reubens’ passing, that will now be known as the character’s last appearance in a titular project.
We’re sending our condolences to Paul Reubens’ fans and loved ones. May he rest in peace.
