Rightwing troll Matt Walsh is obsessing over the sexuality of infants in his latest nonsense diatribe against the LGBTQ+ community.
The Supreme Court is meeting today to decide whether to hear a challenge to Washington state’s ban on conversion therapy for minors, and rightwing extremists have spent the past week falling over themselves trying to reframe the conversation to be about religious freedom of speech.
Walsh spoke on the subject for the Daily Wire on several occasions, at one point taking the approach of insisting “there was never any reason to believe…this idea that you’re born gay or whatever.”
His reasoning seems to be that if people aren’t born gay, but can have their “sexual preferences” changed by things that happen in their lives (and of course he goes on to cite all negative things, such as abuse and pornography addiction, to remind us these people think queerness is wholly tied to things that are wrong), then of course parents should be allowed to force their minor children to undergo conversion therapy.
In trying to follow his train of thought to its logical conclusion, Walsh actually wound up proving the complete lack of logic in his statement.
“If people are born gay, like born gay, you’re gay from birth, that’s what that would mean—and that means that there are, what? Homosexual infants out there?” he challenged. “Again, no sane person thinks that.”
It seems like pretty common sense that babies don’t pop out of the womb with every portion of their personality or predispositions immediately apparent. They’re babies. But it’s widely accepted that these things make themselves known over time, as is age appropriate.
At any rate, Walsh did stop short of fully fleshing out his thought, so let’s finish it out for him. It could go one of two ways. Either infants are born with no sexuality or predisposition to one, which means any sexuality that results is entirely the result of socialization and outside factors, or all infants are born heterosexual.
And if it’s unhinged to say there are homosexual infants, it certainly doesn’t make any sense to say there are heterosexual infants, either. So the only genuine logical conclusion here with the information given is that Matt Walsh is full of shit and shouldn’t be speaking on topics he doesn’t understand.
As hilariously out of touch as Walsh’s little rant about homosexual infants was, it’s also worth calling attention to how he prefaced it.
“The argument from the other side—well, there is no argument, really. These people are just shameless, soulless, hypocritical con artists who will say whatever they need to say in any given situation,” he claimed. “So you can’t really use their own arguments against them, as I’ve just done, because their arguments are not real arguments. Nothing they say means anything.”
Time to look in the mirror, bud.
