A tweet pointed out no men were nominated, and temper tantrums ensued.

Bigots never seem to miss out on an opportunity to attack Sam Smith for some reason or another, although their gender remains at the very top of the list. And unfortunately, celebration over the recent nominations for this year’s MTV Video and Music Awards offered a new chance to spread their hate.

When the 2023 nominees were announced, music fans quickly noticed that women were absolutely dominating this year. In fact, the categories for Artist of the Year and Video of the Year didn’t even include any male nominees at all.

But Smith was among the nominees for the latter, thanks to their collaboration with Kim Petras on “Unholy.” So when it was pointed out that the category contained no men this year, people who compulsively throw a temper tantrum anytime a stranger’s gender identity doesn’t suit their personal preferences about what gender should be did exactly what everyone expected them to do.

Petras also received a smattering of transphobia in the replies, but the majority of it seemed reserved for Smith, who seems to be the target of haters no matter what they do.

Fortunately, there are also always going to be people willing to take up the fight and shut down the ignorant jerks who just want to stir up drama and try to force their own reductive worldview onto everyone else.

No matter how much hollering the bigots do, the fact still remains that no men were nominated for Video of the Year. They can keep getting mad, but Smith is clearly doing just fine in their career without the support of people like that.
