You’re not ready for the sheer queer power of Lucy Dacus’ new “Night Shift” video — but you should watch it anyway.
The video is a take on forever queer fave The Wizard of Oz, and stars out Scream VI and Yellowjackets actor Jasmin Savoy Brown. If that’s not enough queer star power (it is!), behind the lens is none other than trans director Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going To The World’s Fair) calling the shots.
We told you this was an amazing collab.
In the video, Dacus stars as a motel manager working as a Wizard of Oz theme party goes on around her. She watches on, longingly, as queer folks dance, frolic, and kiss. Enter Dorothy, played by Brown, who just so happens to be missing a ruby slipper. Dacus saves the day by fishing it out of the pool and the two connect.
Set to Dacus’ languid, dreamy vocals, it’s a queer fever dream in slow motion. It’s utterly mesmerizing, no doubt thanks to the stylistic choices and point of view of Schoenbrun, who lent their unique aesthetic to World’s Fair and has us eagerly anticipating their follow-up film for A24, I Saw the TV Glow (starring Justice Smith, Phoebe Bridgers, and Amber Benson).
Schoenbrun had previously teased the upcoming video, heaping praise upon Dacus. “NEWS!! I made an epic gay music video for one of the great epic gay jams — NIGHT SHIFT by the brilliant Lucy Dacus,” they wrote on Twitter.
