Dove Cameron’s pop music career has been taking off, and she’s making it perfectly clear who her intended audience is.
The actress and singer recently spoke with People about how her journey has been so far and where her music is headed, as well as her appreciation for the support she’s “gotten from fans and other women in the queer community” along the way.
“I’m allowing myself to be more human on stage rather than having it be the place that I feel the least safe,” she said, crediting the aforementioned support for that shift.
“You don’t have to be a part of the queer community to come and enjoy my music,” Cameron added. “It’s my aspiration to make music that everybody can enjoy — except for straight men.”
The former Disney star came out as bisexual back in 2020, and rapidly embraced her sexuality and newfound community in her music. “Boyfriend” became a queer anthem of last summer, as she sang to an unnamed love interest, “I could be a better boyfriend than him, I could do the shit that he never did.”
It certainly sounds like we can expect more queerness and authenticity from Cameron’s upcoming debut album, which she says will be made up of “stream-of-consciousness sad girl music.”
“[The album will] be out this year, no questions asked,” she said. “I’ve been promising that for way too f—king long.”
