Cara Delevingne dressing up like Elton John may be the gayest thing we've seen all year
Is this what they mean by "make the yuletide gay?"
Cara Delevingne is rocking out in a new role, albeit definitely an unexpected one.
The Paper Towns star stepped into Elton John's shoes in a remake of the music video for his ever-popular Christmas tune, "Step Into Christmas," released this Wednesday.
The original 1973 video features John goofing off while performing the song with his band. It's a quirky video, bordering on bizarre, thanks to the singer's over-the-top facial expressions and the inclusion of random moments, like the one where he suddenly holds up his Watford Hornets Football Club membership card.
This reimagining captures all of that with Delevingne's version of John, while providing a commentary of sorts by jumping back and forth between that and the imaginary behind-the-scenes as the production crew observes everything going on. At several points, the 2024 video even jokingly attempts to explain some of the stranger moments of the original through the crew's contributions. It also flips back and forth between treating the remake as the real deal in-universe and having characters acknowledge that, um, that's not actually Elton John.
In short: it's a delightful way to update an old classic.
The timing of John's decision to revisit "Step Into Christmas" over 50 years later actually makes sense. It's continued to get a lot of play during the holidays, and was certified triple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry last year.
As for bringing Delevingne along for the ride, that stems from the two of them trying to find a project to work together on this year.
"When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 Step Into Christmas video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity," John said in a statement. "Thank God Cara thought the same, because it came out great."
"I hope that Elton may one day return the favour and agree to play me in my not yet developed, written, pitched or funded biopic," Delevingne joked. "Fingers crossed."
