Today the first character posters for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes were released giving us a sneak peak at the delicious costumes we can expect from this prequel movie.
This November we are being treated to a new film in the ever-popular series based on Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, set 60 years before Katniss Everdeen ever volunteered as tribute.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes primarily follows the story of young Coriolanus Snow (originally played by Donald Sutherland) long before he became evil President Snow who presided over the cruel life-and-death games. In the new film we meet a younger, less mustache-twirling version of Snow, who has been tasked with mentoring Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zeglar), one of District 12’s tributes for the 10th annual Hunger Games.
The trailer for the new film warns that there are going to be changes to the battle-royale style games, foreshadowing what is to come in the series we know and love. “Your job is to turn these children into spectacles not survivors,” Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage) says.
We also get a hint and what the relationship between Lucy and Snow might look like when she tells him, “You really want to take care of me in that area? Start believing I can actually win.”
The franchise has always been known for the luxe, over-the-top costumes worn by the wealthy elite who live in the Capitol and while the new character posters are full of gorgeous costumes, they are simpler than those worn by characters like Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) in the original movies.
The posters show us Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) in a button down shirt and tightly fitted vest with a rose on his lapel, Lucy Gray Baird is in a beautiful dress with flowers and snakes on the bodice and a colorful skirt, Hunger Games mentor Sejanus Plinth (Josh Andrés Rivera) is sporting a rich red suit jacket and pleated skirt, and Viola Davis plays Head Gamemaker Dr. Volumnia Gaul who is wearing dark eye makeup and a gorgeous, red and gold ombre dress.
We also get a peak at Tigris Snow (Coriolanus’ cousin) played by trans activist and Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer wearing a metallic pink jacket and skirt combo with exaggerated shoulders. Dean of the Academy and accidental creator of the dreaded Hunger Games Casca Highbottom is seen wearing a black velvet Nehru jacket and monocle and Hunger Games host Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman (Jason Schwartzman) is in a red suit, large bowtie and a curled mustache.
It’s been eight years since the last movie premiered and we can’t wait to see what the citizens of Panem get up to this time around!
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will begin playing in theaters on November 17, 2023.
