After months of radio silence The History of Sound director offers news about the highly anticipated film.

After nearly three long years, we are FINALLY getting director Oliver Hermanus’ queer love story, History of Sound.

In 2021 there was a ton of buzz about this film, but then it went radio silent for years. Luckily we finally have an update!

While we still don’t have a release date for the eagerly awaited queer drama, according toInstinct Magazine the director posted on Instagram that it’s set to be his next project, “It’s been 3 years in the planning, but here’s what I do next. Get ready!”

Directed by Hermanus, who was previously awarded the Queer Palm at Cannes 2011 for his film Beauty, this WWI period piece follows two men who are “deeply changed” by the experience of traveling across the US to record the lives, voices and music of the people who make up the fabric of the country.

“In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives, and while discovering the epic sweep of the U.S., both men are deeply changed,” the film’s official description reads.

You likely know Mescal from his role in Normal People alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones. O’Connor’s breakout role was playing an English sheep farmer in the gay love story God’s Own Country, but he’s probably best known for his role as Prince Charles on Netflix’s The Crown, for which he won an Emmy.

“Paul and Josh are two of the most promising actors of their generation who will share with us deeply soulful performances.,” director Hermanus said of his two leads in an interview with Variety in 2021. “This is an unexpected love story that needs to be told — it is a journey through the life of America, across the 20th century and the traditions of American folk music, all seen through the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound. This undeniably powerful story will certainly resonate with audiences the world over.”

Give us a gay love story any day and we'll want to watch it, but make it a period piece and we're thrilled!
