Red, White & Royal Blue fans, get ready to celebrate!

The highly-anticipated film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s novel, set to launch on Amazon Prime Video on August 11th, has been rated R for “language, some sexual content, and partial nudity” by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

Fans of the book know that the two main characters, Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry, have a steamy relationship, so this rating should come as no surprise.

The cast includes Taylor Zakhar Perez, known for his role in The Kissing Booth, as Alex, and Nicholas Galitzine, who starred in Cinderella, as Prince Henry. Uma Thurman plays Alex’s mother, America’s first female president.

The story revolves around Alex and Henry’s complicated relationship and their public altercation at a royal event that sparks a feud between their respective countries. To repair the damage, their families and handlers force them into a staged truce. But as their friendship begins to thaw, they develop unexpected feelings for each other.

Greg Berlanti produced the film, and Tony winner Matthew López makes his directorial debut and wrote the screenplay. McQuiston expressed their excitement over the adaptation in a statement to Deadline: “It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon, and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life.”

Perez and Galitzine also shared their excitement on Instagram, promising to do justice to the beloved characters of Alex and Henry.

The MPAA rating just added major fuel to the anticipation and excitement of fans waiting to see how the on-screen adaptation will portray the book's steamy romance.
