Nimona has had a long and complicated journey to the screen. The webcomic from ND Stevenson (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) was first announced in 2015 and was to be released by Fox. Production delays meant that when Fox was acquired by Disney a couple years later, the film was to be released under its banner. Instead, it was shelved in 2021 despite being 75% completed, and rumors swirled that Disney execs were pushing to have the queer romance between two of its leads removed or at least dialed back.
Then in April 2022, Nimona was brought back to life by way of Annapurna and Netflix. The film is now slated to drop on the streamer this summer, and we’re starting to learn more about what we can expect — including who will be voicing its cast of characters.
The film is set in a futuristic world with medieval influences, where a knight is framed for a crime he did not commit. His only hope of redemption and proof he is innocent is Nimona, a mischievous teen with the power to shapeshift — and who also just happens to be a creature that the knight has sworn to destroy.
Today, Netflix confirmed that joining the film’s previously announced cast members Chloë Grace Moretz (Nimona), Riz Ahmed (Ballister Boldheart), and Eugene Lee Yang (Ambrosius Goldenloin) are supporting cast Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman. Nimona is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane.
While it was no doubt heartbreaking (and deeply disappointing) to have gone through the rollercoaster of its initial release plans, just one look at Nimona’s amazing and super-queer cast proves it was all worth it and they ended up exactly where they were meant to be.
Nimona is due to be released this summer. Scroll down to check out the first-look images.
