The director of the sequel gave an update in a recent interview.
Who’s ready for Mamma Mia! 3?
The ABBA musical may be getting yet another sequel after all, according to director Ol Parker.
“Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy,” he recently told Screen Rant. “That’s all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn’t it be lovely?”
The first Mamma Mia! followed the plot of the popular Broadway musical, deploying ABBA’s greatest hits to accompany a bride-to-be (Amanda Seyfried) as she invites three former acquaintances (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard) of her mother (Meryl Streep) to her wedding, hoping to determine which one of them might be her father.
The next installment served as both a sequel and a prequel, with some of the movie dedicated to exploring Streep’s character’s youth. It added Lily James and Cher to the already stacked cast, and saw Parker take over directing responsibilities.
Although both films received mixed reviews, they have proven to be fan favorites in the world of musicals, for the nostalgia and pure fun of it all.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again also seems to have marked an upswing in Parker’s directing career, which began in 2005 with the queer classic rom com, Imagine Me & You, which he also wrote.
If he wants to jump on making a third Mamma Mia! and then use that success to get a sequel to Imagine Me & You greenlit, the gays would be forever grateful!
No.
Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical featuring ABBA songs, but is not based on the lives of the members of ABBA.
There has been a longstanding rumor that the cast members were all drunk during the filming of the first movie, but Christine Baranksi set that straight -- no, they were not drunk.
