Bittersweet news for Madonna fans.
The highly anticipated biographical film about Madonna’s life has been officially canceled by Universal Pictures. According to Variety, the biopic has been canceled due to the singer’s commitment to hitting the road with The Celebration Tour – a world tour that will celebrate Madge’s catalog of songs spanning four decades.
The film was already being considered a successor to recent musician-driven biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody (about Freddie Mercury and the band Queen) and Rocketman (about Elton John). Alas, Madonna wanted to be very involved in her own biopic, claiming that she wanted to direct the movie about her own life.
Julia Garner, best known for playing Ruth Langmore on Ozark and Anna Delvey on Inventing Anna, had already been reportedly cast to play Madonna. Many fans deemed her to be perfect for the role… but the project has now been indefinitely shelved.
Despite the very sad update regarding Madonna’s biopic, the reason behind this cancelation is that the singer is going on a world tour, which fans couldn’t be happier and more excited about. The Celebration Tour will run from July to December 2023, with dates all over North America and Europe.
Unlike Madonna’s recent tours to promote her new albums, The Celebration Tour will include songs from the singer’s endless catalog of hit songs. It is truly poised to be a celebration of Madge’s four decades in the music industry.
Following the tour announcement, it was also revealed that RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen will be a part of Madonna’s tour. However, further details about Bob’s involvement in the tour are still being kept under wraps.
We really wanted to see this Madonna biopic starring Julia Garner, so here’s to hoping that the film can be picked back up in the near future!
