M3GAN is a bona fide gay icon and a bona fide box office hit, blowing past its projected $17M box office projection to bring in $30.2M. This is largely thanks to the film's writer Akela Cooper who is a rising star in the horror genre, also penning Malignant, Hell Fest, and the upcoming Nun 2.
When Cooper was recently asked by SFX magazine about why she thinks her killer doll has taken queer culture by storm, she offered a very thoughtful answer. She recalled asking her gay friend the same question, and here’s what she said he told her. “This set-up is actually found family, where this little girl has lost her family, and she has to go live with her aunt. Then this doll is also brought into the situation. That resonates for a lot of people in the gay community, the idea of found family."
Perhaps there is some truth to that... but gay Twitter has thoughts, which are basically: It’s not that deep. It’s
camp.
“@screenrant Sis it’s because she’s a vicious murderer who does a dance”
“@screenrant Gays: *stan an evil doll doing a c*nty dance*
Akela Cooper: ”
“@screenrant Its actually just because she's a girlboss and an icon.”
“@screenrant It’s not that deep. She’s trying for 12 inches when all we need are 6.”
“@screenrant Sis it’s bc she’s the definition of camp”
“@screenrant Akela Cooper talking about #M3GAN vs the actual ghëy community: ”
“@screenrant The real reason gays love her:”
“@screenrant Nah, we just wanted a girl friend who could serve ¢unt while murdering any boy who annoyed us.”
“@screenrant”
While most were expressing their love for the camp, some agreed their connection to the movie was a bit deeper than a (literally) killer dance number.
“We, as queer people, get to choose our own families [to include a fashion icon who will literally murder our bullies]”
