M3GANhas been making waves in the world of horror already, but the doll’s dance going viral is one of the more incredible, stranger things that has happened surrounding the movie — and the people behind it are dishing on how it came to be.
The film gives a modern AI update to the genre of killer dolls, centering around a roboticist (Allison Williams) who gives her 8-year-old niece (Violet McGraw) a M3GAN prototype to disastrous consequences.
While the movie itself has already received positive buzz ahead of its January release, the trailer caught the public’s attention with a creepy dance done by M3GAN in one scene with no real explanation.
People on social media ran with it, emulating the dance themselves to various songs — or silence.

“How about a #M3GAN dance choreographed to Taylor Swift with 8 M3GANs?”
As it turns out, the dance’s inclusion in the movie was sort of a last minute burst of inspiration from the film’s director, Gerard Johnstone.
“It was one of those crazy, sleep-deprived, 3am thoughts,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Wouldn’t it kind of be funny if the soundtrack suddenly became real and M3GAN ended up busting a move to whatever music was playing. It was just something that everyone embraced and loved.”
Well we certainly won’t be forgetting the look of it any time soon, and neither will TikTok.
M3GAN, written by Akela Cooper and produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, hits theaters January 6, 2023.
