Luca Guadagnino’s next project is underway — and don’t worry, he’s keeping it queer.
According to Deadline, the Call Me By Your Name director is currently raising funds for an adaptation of the short William S. Burroughs novel Queer. The book follows a man recounting his life in Mexico City as he romantically pursues a recently discharged American Navy serviceman, and is loosely based on Burroughs’ own time shaking his addiction to heroin.
Daniel Craig is the first actor joining the project, presumably in the lead role.
Not much else is known about it at this time, although this will be the second attempt at turning Queer into a big screen adaptation. Steve Buscemi was originally attached to direct off a script from Oren Moverman back in 2011.
This is one of several projects Guadagnino currently has in the works following his foray into cannibalism with Timothée Chalamet in this year’s Bones and All. Remakes of both Scarface and The Lord of the Flies are among the films fans are still awaiting from the director, who recently said that any potential sequel to Call Me by Your Name would have to wait, as he was busy juggling newer projects instead.
More immediately, we can look forward to Challengers, Guadagnino’s tennis film featuring a love triangle between Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. Production is complete on that film, and it is expected to have a 2023 release.
