Julia Garner isn’t ready to give up on the Madonna biopic just yet.
Back in January, it came to light that Universal Pictures is no longer developing a film based on the “Material Girl” singer’s rise to stardom. No clear reasoning was given, although it came shortly after Madonna — who was slated to direct the feature — announced a sold-out international tour.
After much speculation, Garner had been offered the opportunity to play the Queen of Pop in her biopic, and that’s clearly something she’s still hoping might happen.
When asked about the unfortunate development by ET at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party over the weekend, the actress acted like she might know more about the project’s future than she’s able to let on.
“I don’t want to tell too much,” she said. “I want to keep things… fingers crossed.”
A script for the movie had previously been snagged by Universal in a multi-studio bidding war, with the most recent take co-written by Madonna and Erin Cressida Wilson and following “the early days of the oft-controversial artist and queen of perpetual reinvention,” per Variety.
Much to-do was made over the audition process, which was said to be a sort of boot camp for five potential actresses, made up of “up to 11-hour-a-day choreography sessions” with Madonna’s personal choreographer before moving on to auditioning with Madonna herself.
After something like that, it’s no wonder Garner would be holding out hope the film would still one day make it into production. And Madonna apparently hopes the same, despite currently focusing on her tour instead.
So we may have to wait a little longer, but considering the iconic pop star doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, it seems entirely possible we’ll see the film make it to the big screen sooner or later — and maybe even still with Garner taking the lead.
