Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are taking a break from the Marvel franchise to produce the live-action Hercules movie... and they're making it clear that this won't be like all other live-actions – it'll be a cool live-action.
According to Variety, the Avengers: Endgame directors want to take this film in a more experimental direction. Their new production studio AGBO is tackling the movie musical with Guy Ritchie, who's responsible for 2019's live-action Aladdin and has a "penchant for experimentation."
To separate it from other live-action Disney remakes, Joe Russo says he wants the Hercules film to be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution," adding, ”I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film."
Russo plans to defy expectations of what a live-action film can be, less of a remake and more of a reimagining, saying that he's inspired by TikTok. “There are questions about how you translate it as a musical,” he explained. “Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”
It's unclear what that means, but the comment is already getting a swarm of hilarious social media reactions.
Good or bad, we're sure that this inspiration will make it an entertaining watch, especially considering how beloved the animated movie and its soundtrack are. Hercules is very much in the production stages now, with David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) working on a script.
It'll be some time before we see the film come to life, but we're already dreaming about what it might look like.
