If the movie lives up to its trailer, we are in for a delightfully unhinged time.

Move over, lesbian period pieces—Bottoms is taking over!

The first trailer for the raunchy high school fight club movie has finally arrived, and it looks like exactly the kind of hilarious R-rated chaotic teen movie we’ve been needing to add to the queer canon.

Shiva Babyduo Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott have teamed up once again for the film, which centers around PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), two high school losers who get the brilliant idea to start a fight club to teach their classmates how to defend themselves against the jocks—but their real goal is to win over their cheerleader crushes, Brittany (Kaia Gerber) and Isabel (Havana Rose Liu).

The trailer’s note of being “from the producers of Pitch Perfect and Cocaine Bear” actually flawlessly sets the tone for what’s promised from this two minute sneak peek into the movie itself. Profanity, comedic violence, and an all-around over-the-top take on high school life have featured heavily in these types of films aimed at teen boys and coming from a place of heteronormativity in the past, but this female-centric, queer-led fresh take looks set up to earn its place not only in LGBTQ+ cinema, but in top tier teen comedies as a whole.

Bottoms premiered at SXSW in March of this year, to rave reviews from the people who get it. It was penned by Sennott and Seligman, the latter of whom also directed the movie, and also stars Ruby Cruz, Nicholas Galitzine, Marshawn Lynch, and Wayne Pére.

It is currently slated for a release date of August 25, 2023, and you can check out the full red band trailer below.

Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
