We have to laugh.
A disturbing new video has come to the surface on social media showing Kent Christmas, a Christian pastor from Tennessee, complaining about the upcoming live-action Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
“I curse in the name of the lord this new Barbie movie that has been released full of transexual, and transgender, and homosexuality,” the preacher criticizes.
Later, he calls on God to make a “holy judgment” on the movie.
To be clear, there are only a few LGBTQ+ actors in the Barbie film, like Hari Nef, Scott Evans, and Alexandra Shipp. The movie also features a gigantic cast of actors such as Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Dua Lipa Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, John Cena, America Ferrara, Will Ferrell, and Helen Mirren… to it’s fair to say that the ratio of LGBTQ+ talent in the film isn’t as overwhelming as this preacher claims.
Moreover, given that all actors are playing Barbie or Ken dolls, there’s just no sexuality in any of the characters in the film. This is even suggested in the trailer when Ken asks Barbie to stay the night but legitimately doesn’t know what they’d spend the night doing. These are toys without genitals.
It’s quite a big stretch for anyone to claim that this Barbie movie is “full of transgender and homosexuality” when it comes to its casting, character details, or storyline. Queer people are, indeed, excited to see it – which doesn’t make the actual movie any queerer.
Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric is trendy among conservatives right now, and this is yet another nonsensical example of the “points” these people are trying to make.
Barbie opens July 21 in theaters.
