Apple TV+is adding a dose of heart and harmony to its family content lineup this spring with Lulu Is a Rhinoceros, a brand-new animated musical special premiering in May.
Based on the beloved children’s book by father-daughter duo Jason and Allison Flom, the story follows Lulu, a fun-loving dog who doesn’t see a pup in the mirror—she sees a rhinoceros. And she’s not backing down. In a journey filled with courage, friendship, and a whole lot of musical flair, Lulu sets out to prove that identity is something only we get to define for ourselves.
Leading the voice cast is Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) as Lulu, joined by an all-star lineup that includes Grammy nominee Alex Newell (Glee), Emmy nominee Dulé Hill (Psych), Paul Rust (Love), and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts). The special is directed by Angela Stempel, with original songs composed by Golden Globe nominee Leland and lyrics by Allison Flom. Jina Hyojin An and Shirley Song, both known for their work on BE@RBRICK, deliver the original score.
Produced by Propagate Content and Bento Box Animation, the special is described as a “pop musical family event” about kindness, acceptance, and celebrating what makes each of us unique. In the words of Apple, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros is more than a fun adventure—it’s an empowering reminder for kids (and grown-ups) that it’s okay to be different, and it’s always worth being yourself.
With bright animation, original music, and a story rooted in self-love and empathy, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros promises to be one of Apple TV+’s standout family specials this year—joining a growing slate of award-winning and inclusive children’s programming.
The musical premieres globally on Apple TV+ May 30.
