The Trump administration’s new sweeping tariffs are causing foreign leaders to consider retaliatory measures and average Americans to gird their loins against impending price hikes. But amidst all of the chaos and the plummeting stock market are glorious memes dunking on President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Trump escalated his ongoing trade war by announcing a 10% tariff on imports into the United States and high tariffs on goods from dozens of other countries, including 49% for Cambodia, 34% for China, and 20% for the European Union.
Trump’s “Liberation Day” event, meant to “Make America Wealthy Again,” threatened to upend global alliances and caused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to announce they plan to “fight these tariffs with counter measures,” and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen to say that this trade war will be "dire for millions of people around the globe,” Reuters reports.
Russia was notably absent from the list of other countries subject to increased tariffs, but several places were on the list that aren’t inhabited by humans at all. The internet has latched onto Heard Island and McDonald Islands, roasting Trump for asking penguins to pay tariffs since no people live there. "The penguins are going to pay for what they did to our country. Believe me,” someone joked.
Other hilarious memes ranged from posting that Trump shouldn’t have gotten rid of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion because DEI clearly stood for “Da Economy Intact” and quipping that "now economists know how scientists felt when he said 'inject bleach.’”
