Two more icons are joining the cast of Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of the Broadway show Wicked!
'thank u next' singer Ariana Grande and Broadway star Cynthia Erivo are already locked and loaded to play Glenda and Elphaba respectively, alongside Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey who will play Fiyero.
It was announced earlier today that Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh and the one and only Jeff Goldblum have also signed on to the project! Talk about an all-star cast. Yeoh is playing Madame Morrible, the head of the school. Goldblum will play The Wizard.
Yeoh is having quite the year for her starring role in the incredible sci-fi action film Everything Everywhere All At Once. The beloved movie, which features a prominent LGBTQ+ storyline, is winning awards left and right and even gaining Oscar buzz for Yeoh. The Wicked film will also be a reunion of sorts. Jon M. Chu is directing Wicked and previously directed Yeoh in the 2018 hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians.
Wicked is a massively successful 2003 Broadway musical based on The Wizard of Oz universe, revealing what was really going on behind the scenes since Dorothy only knew half the story. It paints a tender portrait of the relationship between Glenda and Elphaba, and has produced many iconic musical numbers including "Popular", "For Good", and "Defying Gravity".
The story will be reportedly split into two films. The first part of Wicked is currently slated to be released on December 25, 2024. Truly a Christmas gift for the gays!
